The post office opened here in 1885 as Rockland Station.
In 1898 the name was changed to Upper Dorchester, likely after the parish which in 1787 had been named in honour of Sir Guy Carleton,
1 st Baron Dorchester (1724-1808) who served as lieutenant-governor, then governor, of Quebec from 1766 to 1768 and then governor-in-chief of British North America (1782-1783 and 1786-1796).
