- The post office opened here in 1885 as Rockland Station.
- In 1898 the name was changed to Upper Dorchester, likely after the parish which in 1787 had been named in honour of Sir Guy Carleton,
- 1 st Baron Dorchester (1724-1808) who served as lieutenant-governor, then governor, of Quebec from 1766 to 1768 and then governor-in-chief of British North America (1782-1783 and 1786-1796).
