In 1765 Gagetown was named for Gen. Thomas Gage (1721-1787) to whom a large tract of land here had been granted.
Following service in the Seven Years War (1756-1763), Gage became military governor of Montreal. On the outbreak of the American Revolution he was appointed governor of Massachusetts.
In 1767 he sold his 20,000 acre land grant to Stephen Kemble for 10 pounds and for a time thereafter the place was known as Kemble Manor.
