The community takes its name from the stream which flows SE into the Oromocto R. In Maliseet the stream is called Tesegwaniksis, 'little stream meeting with the main river.'
In Maliseet wasis means 'baby.' Waasis Station was the name used by the post office when it operated here from 1870-1917.
