New Brunswick Tourism Region : St. John River Valley
Description From Owner:
- The community takes its name from the river which flows W to join the Tobique R.
- The Maliseet called the river Wabskihigun for 'stone implements,' since this area was one of their sources for flint for arrowheads.
- They also called the river Awkeeaukwapskaneegan, 'river with a wall at mouth,' referring to a gypsum cliff there.
- On an 1829 land plan the river is shown as Wapskehegan, but from the late 1800s lumbermen called it the Wapske River and the community took that name when the post office opened here in 1909.
