The name of the bay is derived from the Micmac Goolwahgahweek, 'place of the hooded seal,' and is first shown on a 1762 map.
Quaco Head, extending into the Bay of Fundy is shown as Ariquaki on J. B. L. Franquelin's 1686 map of the Fundy coast. West Quaco post office opened in 1885.
