Both places were named for Lemuel Allan Wilmot (1809-1878) who was a long-time MLA for York C. , a member and virtual head of the first administration under responsible government in the province.
He left politics to become a judge and later served as the first native-born lieutenant-governor of New Brunswick from 1868 to 1873.
