This was the site of an Acadian refugee camp after the fall of Fort Beauséjour and the expulsion of the Acadians in 1755.
There is no definitive source for the name. Historian Alan Rayburn suggests 'vin' is likely a corruption of 'ventes' and that early settlers had named the place Baie des ventes, French for 'bay of winds.'
