New Brunswick Tourism Region : Southeastern New Brunswick
Description From Owner:
- Cape Tormentine...The place shows up on a 1672 map by Nicolas Denys (1598-1688) as Cap de Tourmentin.
- Denys wrote of the place: 'Following the coast one comes upon Cap Tourmentin. It is a great point which advances into the sea, and is only two leagues and a half from Isle Saint Jean (PEI).
- This is the narrowest place in all this strait.' On a 1749 map the place is shown as Torment and on a 1755 map as Stormy Point.
- Tourmentin is a French word for a sail let out in foul weather, but the name more likely derives from the French cap de tourmentin which translates as 'cape of storms.'
