- The community was named in 1906 after the Brant goose for which there is a sanctuary here.
- Branta bernicla is a smaller-sized cousin of the Canada goose, Branta canadensis.
- Branta is a Latinized form of an Anglo-Saxon word for 'burnt' or 'charred,' a reference to Branta 's dark plumage.
