- The place was established in 1825 and named Howard Settlement after Sir Howard Douglas (1776-1861), Lieut. Gov. of NB from 1823-1831.
- For a brief period the place may have been called Shangallee. The post office was known as Canterbury Station from 1859-1969, named for Thomas Manners-Sutton (1814-1877), later third Viscount Canterbury, lieutenant-governor of NB from 1854 to 1861.
- Early in Manners-Sutton's term of office, the government led by John Ambrose Street (1795-1865) was defeated. Manners-Sutton called on the leader of the opposition, Charles Fisher (1808-1880) to form a new administration.
- This brought responsible government to New Brunswick. The village was incorporated in 1966.
