New Brunswick Tourism Region : Southeastern New Brunswick
Description From Owner:
- Pelé is French for 'bald' or 'bare.' From 1879 to 1903 the post office here was called Cape Bald.
- In 1903 and until 1906 the name was Cap Pelé. Then in 1906 and until 1949, the name Cape Bald was restored.
- In 1949 residents petitioned to have the name changed back to Cap Pelé and the Canadian Permanent Committee on Geographical Names approved that name change in 1950.
- Cap Pelé is the largest exporter of smoked herring in North America. Herring is hung for up to three weeks over a spruce sawdust fire in the 30 commercial smokehouses operating here.
- Aboiteau Beach at 33 Saint-André Road offers change area, washrooms, showers and over 5 km of sandy beaches and some of the warmest saltwater swimming in North America.
