The place was named for Ward Chipman, Jr. (1787-1851), MLA from Saint John, Speaker in 1823, and chief justice of NB from 1834 to 1851.
His father, Ward Chipman, Sr. (1754-1824) was a prominent Loyalist and sat on the Supreme Court. When his father died in 1824, Ward Chipman, Jr. was appointed to the Supreme Court.
In 1870 W. C. King renamed the community Lillooet after his brother built a schooner here and named it the Lillooet after the town in northern British Columbia. By 1903 that name was no longer in use.
Gaspereau River No. 2 (Burpee) covered bridge, built in 1913, is on Gaspereau River Cross Road. It underwent $70,000 worth of repairs in the fall of 2007 after a fire of suspicious origins caused extensive damage.
