PO Box 1066 |
New Brunswick Tourism Region : Fundy Shore
Description From Owner:
- Hampton Parish was established in 1795 and likely named after the Hampton near London, England or a Hampton in the New England states of New Hampshire, New York or New Jersey.
- The post office name was Hampton from 1845 to 1852 when it changed to Hampton Station and in 1858 was named Ossekeag by the European and North American Railway.
- Ossekeag was derived from the Maliseet Peskeskick for 'marshy brook.' Hampton became the shire town of Kings C. in 1871 and the name changed back to Hampton when the village was incorporated in 1966.
- When Hampton became the new shire town in 1870, replacing Kingston, materials from the old gaol were used to construct the mansard-roofed Hampton Gaol at 17 Centennial Road, now a Provincial Historic Site.
- Nearby at 27 Centennial Road is the Kings County Museum which displays pioneer artifacts and handicrafts, a unique set of weights and measures from 1857 and a collection of bells.
