Description From Owner:
  • In 1765 Hillsborough Township was created and named for Wills Hill, Earl of Hillsborough (1718-1793), then the lord commissioner of trade and plantations.
  • The same declaration also sought to rename the Petitcodiac R. , noting that the township was to extend to 'the fall of the Petitcoudiack now called Hillsborough River,' but that name change attempt was unsuccessful.
  • The place was first known as Dutch Village after it was founded in 1766 by immigrants of German origin from Pennsylvania. Among these settlers was Heinrich Stief (later Steeves) and his seven sons.
  • They were to found a dynasty now said to number in excess of 150,000 worldwide. Hon. William Henry Steeves (1814-1873), a native of Hillsborough, was MLA for the County of Albert and one of New Brunswick's Fathers of Confederation.
  • The home where he was born, the oldest of I I children, at 40 Mill St., is now the Honourable William Henry Steeves House Museum.
  • It's a Colonial-style mansion built around an 1812 cottage furnished in late 1800s style and is open to the public from July 1 to Labour Day.
  • The Salem and Hillsborough Railroad Museum at 2847 Main St. displays railway equipment and a number o interesting railroad vehicles. Weldon Creek No. 3 (Steeves, Hartley) covered bridge, built in 1923, is on nearby Route 910.
