- The name Deer Island may 'be a translation of the Passamaquoddy word Eduki m ' niku or Edokwemeneek meaning 'deer island.'
- A native legend has it that a pack of wolves was chasing a deer and a moose. Glooscap saw that the animals being pursued were tiring so he changed them into islands.
- Moose I. now in Maine and Deer Island remain side by side; The Wolves are a small archipelago to the E in the Bay of Fundy.
- The province operates a year-round toll-free ferry service between Deer Island and Letete on Route 172.
- From 45 sq km Deer Island there are privately-operated ferries to Campobello Island and Eastport, Maine.
- The Old Sow is a whirlpool in Passamaquoddy Bay S of Deer Is., considered second only to Norway's Maelstrom.
- It is formed by tidal currents coming together in a narrow passage where the water spins, twists and roars with a noise said to resemble the roaring of an old sow.
- The whirlpool peaks during the new and full moon phases ond can be seen three hours prior to high tide from Deer Island Point Park.
- Take Route l, Exit 52 or 56, then Route 172 to the ferry landing onto Route 772.
