Description From Owner:
- 32 km SE of Woodstock.
- The community takes its name from the stream which is derived from the Maliseet Nelgwaweegek, possibly 'straight stream,' referring to the fact that its lower part, before being flooded by Mactaquac L., was in line with the St. John R.
- On a 1690 French grant the name is shown as Nerkoiouiquek and on a 1761 chart by Charles Morris as Nexaquequick. On subsequent maps, journals and grants the place is shown as:
- Naraqueweguick, Nixaquequish, Narcawwigack, Nackawekick Creek, Markawecick, Naquiwickack and Narkawicak. The post office opened here in 1866 as Lower Southampton.
- In 1970 the name was changed to Nackawic and the village was incorporated. In 2004 the St.-Anne Nackawic pulp mill closed its doors ending employment for 400 people and affecting hundreds of others in the province's forest-based economy.
- The International Garden at 152 Otis Drive has over 50 species of trees and shrubs along a waterfront walking trail and also the World's Largest Axe. The blade is seven tonnes of stainless steel and the handle is 15 metres (49 feet) high.
