Description From Owner:
- The Petitcodiac R. flows SE into Shepody Bay and the name derives from a corrupted Micmac descriptive, Pet-koot-koy-ek or Epelkutogoyek, translated as 'the river that bends around back.'
- One of the earliest references to the place name is on a 1686 map which shows it as Petcoucoyek and in 1760 a land grant shows it as Petitcodiak.
- In the 1774 Journey Through Nova Scotia, authors John Robinson and Thomas Rispin rendered the name phonetically as Petticoat Jack. In 1848 the post office opened as Head of Petitcodiac.
- Since 1865 the name has been Petitcodiac. In 1898 Petitcodiac was a station on the Intercolonial Railway and a central depot for the Elgin, Petitcodiac and Havelock Railway with a population of 700.
