- The place was first called Gaspereau after the river, but in 1854 when the post office opened the name was changed to honour James Bruce, 8th Earl of Elgin (1811-1863), Gov. Gen. of Canada from 1846 to 1854.
- The village was incorporated in 1922.
- Monro Heritage Centre at I Spring St. is a community museum with Heritage Canada displays on the history of Fort Gaspereaux and the neighbouring community of Baie Verte.
- Andy's Dummy Farm on Route 16 is a collection of comical folk art characters fashioned from recycled household articles.
- Port Elgin Nature Trails has over 70 km (43 miles) of hiking, walking and cycling trails. Intersection of Routes 15 & 16, Exit 25, follow Route 970 to Station Street.
