The river from which the community took its name is believed to have been named for Micmac Chief 'Sock' Renou or 'Sock' Renard.
In Micmac the river was called Seeboosis, meaning 'little brook.' This area was settled around 1800 and is also the site of Renous Indian Reserve 12, established in 1817 on 100 acres of land.
