- First known as Carleton Station when the post office opened in 1876. The name was changed in 1881 to honour the Rev. James Rogers (1826-1903) who became the first Roman Catholic bishop of Chatham.
- Rogersville is the site of a 'Trappist monastery founded in 1902.
