4556 Principale St, Suite 300 |
New Brunswick Tourism Region : Southeastern New Brunswick
Description From Owner:
- The place was first known as Ohio Settlement. The post office opened in 1885 as St. Anthony, after a French mission established near here in 1700.
- It was named for the Recollet seminary at Saint-Antoine-de-Padoue, France. St. Anthony of Padua (1195-1231) was a Franciscan friar who was canonized in 1226.
- He was noted for his charismatic presence and devotion to the poor. In 1928 the name was changed to St-Antoine-de-Kent and in 1966 the village was incorporated as St. Anthony.
- From 1969 the official name has been Saint-Antoine. Saint-Antoine is the birthplace of the Hon. Louis J. Robichaud (1925-2005), premier from 1960 to 1970.
- He is credited with giving New Brunswick its distinctive provincial flag, raised for the first time in March of 1965.
