Description From Owner:
  • The first settlement here by Acadians in 1789 was on both sides of the St. John R. and was known as Grand Riviere for a nearby stream of the same name.
  • In 1842 a newly defined boundary between New Brunswick and Maine was proclaimed and the now separated communities were renamed.
  • Van Buren in Maine was named for Martin Van Buren (1782-1862), 8th president of the U.S. Saint Léonard was named for local magistrate Leonard Reed Coombes who came here in 1840.
  • The two communities share a municipal flag and each July a joint festival is held to celebrate their common Acadian heritage.
  • From 1847-1880 the post office name here was Grand River, changed in 1880 to St. Leonard Station. Incorporated in 1920, the name changed to St.-Léonard in 1926.
