- Shediac Parish was established in 1827 and was the first New Brunswick parish given a name of native origin.
- The Micmac name for this place was Esedeiik, meaning 'running far back,' with reference to the deeply indented coastline or the portage route to the Petitcodiac R.
- In the area are: Shediac Bay, Shediac Harbour, Shediac Bridge, Shediac Cape, Shediac Island, and Shediac Ridge.
- In 1755 the French had Fort Shediac near Shediac Cape and from 1856 to 1870 there was a post office called Shediac Road in a nearby community called Harrisville which no longer exists.
- In 1926, Edward R. McDonald patented the board game Scrabble.
- Birthplace of Daniel Lionel Hanington (1835-1909), premier from 1882-83. Muriel McQueen Fergusson of Shediac was the first female Speaker of the Senate of Canada.
- Lawyer Muriel McQueen Fergusson of Shediac was the first woman elected to municipal council in Fredericton in 1951 , was reelected and became deputy mayor.
- In 1953 she was appointed as the first female senator from the Atlantic provinces. In 1972 she became the first female Speaker of the Senate.
- Shediac boasts it is 'Lobster Capital of the World' and has created a 90-ton lobster sculpture in Rotary Park on Route 133. The World's Largest Lobster is I l metres (35 feet) in length and stands 5 metres (16 feet) tall.
- The Pascal-Poirier Art Gallery and Museum at 290 Main St. is in one of Shediac's oldest houses, built in 1825.
- The museum is dedicated to the life and work of Pascal Poirier (1852-1933), a Shediac native, author and first Acadian senator.
- On June 24 in 1939 the first trans-Atlantic airmail flight departed from Shediac and landed at Foynes in Ireland.
