- The community takes its name from the river which the Micmac called Taboosimkik, meaning 'two names,' or 'two entrances,' with reference to the main river and adjacent French Cove.
- On a 1685 map it appears as Tabochemkek and on a 1686 map as Tabogimquec. The present spelling has been consistent since 1931.
- Nearby features are Tabusintac Beach, Tabusintac Gully, Old Tabusintac Gully, North Tabusintac Hill, South Tabusintac Hill and the 8,000-acre Tabusintac Indian Reserve established in 1802.
- Tabusintac Centennial Library and Museum at 4490 Route 11, is in the former Free Methodist church, originally used for the second rural high school.
- Tabusintac Lagoon and Estuary is a 4,100 ha (10,131 acre) designated wetland with hiking trails for bird-watching.
