Baie-Sainte-Anne (Miramichi River Valley)

The place was settled in 1760 by Acadians who returned after the 1755 expulsion and named their community for Sainte Anne, patroness of the Micmac and mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The Micmac called the place Eskumunaak, or 'outlook place.' In 1959 in a sudden storm, 35 fishermen and 22 boats from here and nearby Baie-Sainte-Anne were lost at sea in hurricane-force winds and 60 foot waves.

The place was first known as French Village when two French families, Robichaud and Muzeroll settled in the 1760s.

. In English the place name is 'fir (tree) point.' The area was settled in 1811 and first called Pointe-au-Grand-Sapin and later Pointe-aux-Sapins.

The river was named for the portage route from Big Tracadie R. to Tabusintac Bay. It was first called John Boys River for John Niles dit Boy who lived at the bridge here.

In 1758, Charles Deschamps de Boishébert et de Raffetot (1727-1797) established a refugee camp for 3,500 survivors of the expulsion of the Acadians here and on an adjoining point now called Wilson Point after New Jersey Loyalist John Wilson.
