The stream is first shown on a 1783 map as Backoguemick and a 1784 map as Pegagomique and in 1799 as Peckagomique, Maliseet words for 'salmon spawning place.'

The community takes its name from Simonds Parish which was established in 1842 and named for Charles Simonds (1783-1859), Speaker of the NB House of Assembly.
