The place was settled in 1842 by destitute workers from Fredericton who were recently arrived from Ireland.

The community name derives from that of the river and lake, the Maliseet and Passamaquoddy word Mageecaa-tawik, 'river of big eels.'

Manners Sutton Parish was established in 1855 and named for Sir John Henry Manners-Sutton (1814-1877), Lieut.-Gov. of NB from 1854-61. The post office opened in 1885.

In 1834 the place was known as Ensor Settlement for Charles Ensor who had a grant here which he abandoned before 1841.
