The post office originally was called Magaguadavic but in 1900 was renamed Brockway to honour settlers Reuben and Rufus Brockway who came from New Hampshire in 1818, followed by Artemus and Alvia Brockway. |

In the 1850s the place was called City Camp for the profusion of lumber camps in the area. The place was named for John McAdam (1807-1893), MLA from 1854 to 1866 and 1882 to 1886 and MP 1872 to 1874. |
