The community takes its name from the river which possibly was named for an early trapper there. Micmacs knew the place as Wopskaygalajeechk, 'white rocks along the banks.'

The place was settled in 1879 under the Free Grants Act and named for Sir John Douglas Sutherland Campbell, 9th Duke of Argyll and Marquess of Lorne (1845-1914), Gov.-Gen. of Canada from 1878 to 1883.
