Podnocker Cove : The place was possibly named for the 'pod auger,' a straight, grooved type later replaced by the screw auger.

The place was first known by the Maliseet as Skumcook, believed to mean 'sand bay.' It was later named Douglas Harbour to honour Sir Howard Douglas (1776-1861), lieutenant-governor of NB from 1823-1832.

The post office opened as Tilley's Landing in 1854 but the name later changed to McGowan's Corner after Thomas McGowan who was a lumberman here in the 1860s, or another McGowan who operated a tavern.

The place was first settled by Loyalists and later, around 1800, by immigrants from Scotland. The post office opened in 1860 as Scotch Town and later changed to Scotchtown.
