The Petitcodiac R. flows SE into Shepody Bay and the name derives from a corrupted Micmac descriptive, Pet-koot-koy-ek or Epelkutogoyek, translated as 'the river that bends around back.'

The Micmac called the river Manoosak, 'island at the outlet.' The river and community are named for Peter Paulet, a Micmac medicine man who lived near the mouth of the river and died here around 1800.
