The place name is a French descriptive for 'Oak Point.' In 1860 the community was the northern terminus of the European and North American Railway and a line of steamers ran between here and Summerside, PEI.

The original name was Micmac, Omskoodok, for which a meaning is not known. In 1859 it appears on a New Brunswick map as Bellevue Settlement, but the post office opened in 1890 as Scadouc.

Historian William Francis Ganong attributes the name to unknown Micmac sources. It appears as Naboujagan in the 1812 journal of Bishop Joseph-Octave Plessis (1763-1825). The community takes its name from the river.

In 1897 the post office was Leger Corner after an early settler. In 1946 the place was renamed after the disastrous Aug. 19, 1942 Battle of Dieppe (France) to honour Canadian servicemen who died there.
