James, Jesse and Noah Tabor had land grants in this area and the place may have been called Taborville before the arrival of some Hanfords who were Loyalists. The post office opened as Hanford Brook in 1893.

This area was settled in 1830 by Henry, James and Samuel Shanklin and when the post office opened in 1885, Samuel J. Shanklin was the postmaster. For a brief time in 1903 the place was also known as Patterson Settlement.

The community took its name from the parish which was established in 1786, likely named after St. Martins in Maryland.
