The village was first called Fenwicks Corners after the first settler, Matthew Fenwick, who arrived in 1801, and for storekeepers J. A. Fenwick and F. T. Fenwick.

The place was first known as Pleasant Valley, then Sussex Island and Sussex Vale. The Sussex was to honour Prince Augustus Frederick, Duke of Sussex (1773-1842), sixth son of King George Ill and Queen Charlotte.

The community takes its name from the river which flows into the Kennebecasis R. and is named for Sir Andrew Snape Hamond (1738-1828), an early landholder in the area, who served as lieutenant-governor of Nova Scotia from 1780 to 1782.
